Fighter (#510)


Yeah.  My movie choice for yesterday seems desperate, but there’s one thing you can always say about films made in Bollywood.  Despite the language problem and the sometimes difficult to read captions, you can manage to figure out what’s going on because they're not too complex. I saw an interesting one yesterday even though it was about 2 1/2 hours long.  This one was entitled FIGHTER snd it was the Indian version of Top Gun, with the hero even more outrageous, insubordinate  and courageous than Tom Cruise.  It is about the Indian Air Force snd their mission to fight rebel terroristic activists led by an evil guy easily identified by his deep voice. It is focused on a special team assigned to this mission and led by the Indian Tom Cruise Patty (also called Shami by his family) who is romantically involved with another team member.  It is a thriller snd features some good air fights and, as we have come to expect, group dance sequences in the midst of all the goings-on.  This one had at least three dances and they are enjoyable, lively and inappropriate.  The cast is attractive snd the dialogue is interrupted with English on occasion.  The music is loud and fun, and a good time was had by all. Critics frowned on this with only 29% affording it a thumbs up, but audiences agreed with me and 89% approved.  You don’t go to Bollywood films to  experience anything more than enjoyment and being entertained. This has been a dreadful week for my theater with most of the 16 theaters in my multiplex showing reissues of movies I have already seen.  The only two unseen remaining films are Spiderman and Aquaman, and I refuse to see any more of those.  Happy Groundhog Day.  Punxsutawney is just up the road from where I live but I will miss the shadow watching once again.

Civil War (#541)

Because I have been expounding my theory about the upcoming presidential election to anyone crazy enough to listen to me, (my theory being that no matter who wins the election, there is going to be a civil war in this country), I was profoundly interested in the movie I saw today.  Its premise and point of view are cloudy because there is no explanation for the "war," what it's about, why it started and who are the players.  Initially, the president speaking to the nation talks about the resurrectionists (is that a valid word?) in Texas and California, and the ones in Florida trying to persuade the Carolinas to join the rebellion, but later a newscaster reports on the Russians invading Washington, DC, and demanding total surrender at the White House. That is, if I was hearing things correctly.  Perhaps it was the rebels in the White House.  The movie, well directed and remarkably well and realistically filmed, does not appear to have any political bent or motivation.  CIV

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (#473)

Well, I did it! — because I didn’t  want to disappoint some of my grandchildren who would have been disappointed if I hadn’t gone since they chide me endlessly for my liking Taylor Swift.  So, despite misgivings — possible crowds and long lines, it wasn’t included with my unlimited subscription so I ha to pay and i would miss some football — I went to the 11:30 a.m. showing of TAYLOR SWIFT; THE ERAS TOUR, which was scheduled to be shown every half hour (and sometimes only 15 minutes) from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.  I was more than mildly surprised; I liked it.  A lot!  Even though it was endless, lasting just short of three hours, it was spectacular.  The settings were incredibly creative, the band, dancers and singers were excellent, the choreography flawless, and Ms. Swift was remarkable, in energy, voice, enthusiasm and everything else.  The music, she explained, was from the five albums she released which were not associated with a tour, among them Reds and 1989.  And about Ms. Swift:

Monkey Man (#539)

I saw MONKEY MAN today under unusual circumstances which I may or may not reveal at a future date.  It stars and is directed by Dev Patel, an actor of Indian descent whom I have seen before in Slumdog Millionaire and other films.  I think he is a first class actor, but he has really changed his image in this one from a charmer to a overly aggressive purveyor of mayhem. This film is about revenge and retribution and skillfully mixes such disparate elements as politics, religion, mysticism, fables and intense violence in surreal, psychedelic, symbolic and allegorical surroundings.  If this sounds like something more than you can handle, I hasten to add, it’s not.  But it is unique, and I came away wondering if I admired it or liked it and at this writing, I’m still not sure.  Patel plays an impoverished young man with a traumatic childhood who is a competitor in what appears to be an illegal, underground arena for no-holds-barred fights, wears a gorilla mask and is beaten to a pulp night

Killers of the Flower Moon (#475)

I entered the theater yesterday with trepidation because I was faced with the prospect of a THREE AND A HALF HOUR movie, which is borderline extreme punishment!  Surprise!!  It was not any form of punishment; it was an excellent experience and never once felt too long or too boring.  In his introduction to KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, director et al Martin Scorcese explains he had wanted to do this film every since he read the book.  He did it with glorious cinematography, excellent scripting and first class performances by all the cast.  This, as many of you (but not me) know, is the story of the serial murder of indigenous people,  the Osage, in Oklahoma in the 1920s.  They are the wealthiest people in the world thanks to  oil found on their land, and certain people, lead by a sycophantic and duplicitous King Hale, a superb performance by Robert De Nero,  resent them.  Aided by his needy nephew, Ernest, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in his best ever acting role, King surreptitiously lau

Celebrating 500!!!

To celebrate my 500th review, I thought I’d go back in time and review how and when they started.  My first review was written on May 29, 2015, when I was only 86 years old.  It was written for my children to prove I was doing something more than feeling sorry for myself after my wife died  The movie was San Andreas, and the review was three typewritten lines.  “Saw San Andreas today.  It wasn’t bad - lots of action.  Glad I didn’t see it as a 3D version.  I wouldn’t have been able to dodge all the buildings falling.”  Three line reviews continued until October 16 when I saw two movies in one week and wrote 10 lines.  They were two movies with all-black casts—Birth of a Nation  and Queen of Katwa.  I think by then a couple of my grandchildren were added to the mailing list.  It wasn’t until February 7, 2016 that my reviews became longer and I reviewed two movies in one review—Fences and Hidden Figures and from then on, like Topsy numbers of films grew and numbers of the mailing list as
